BHUBANESWAR: The Covid-induced lockdown and more usage of internet platforms for sale of essentials as well as other commodities throughout the times have prompted cyber criminals to attack with impunity.
At least 256 people were tricked of almost Rs 70.78 lakh by unidentified cyber criminals from the capital city through the lockdown 1.0 and 2.0 in May this season.
The cyber assistance desk (7440006709) of this commissionerate authorities had received complaints against the 256 people past month.
“We discovered that a large part of the complainants dropped their cash when putting online orders, possibly spirits, food, family articles and appliances.
Altogether 63 individuals lost their cash throughout UPI fraud and 48 individuals were scammed while making trades through debit and charge cards.
Our help desk employees promptly intervened and regained about Rs 12 lakh,” deputy commissioner of police Uma Shankar Dash explained.
Police sources said many sufferers discovered fraudulent withdrawal of cash in their accounts when they clicked phishing and questionable mails or hyperlinks within cashback offers.
Sometimes the sufferers, who weren’t conversant with internet transactions, shared their own passwords after being duped from the cyber crooks.
“we’ve been sensitizing individuals to not discuss their account information and PIN using strangers.

The commissionerate authorities enrolled 123 cyber crime cases in 2020 compared to 124 these instances in 2019.
But, cyber offense cases increased dangerously by almost 31 percent in 2020 compared to 2019.
Altogether 1,931 cyber crime cases have been registered annually according to 1,475 instances in 2019.
Police sources stated majority of these cases were reported throughout the lockdown times this past calendar year.
A couple of days before, director general of authorities Abhay warned people against cyber criminals, that are outside to cash in over the Covid-19 catastrophe.
Authorities said the cyber offenders have generated fake sites and enticed people to enroll for Covid vaccination.

Authorities said some bogus sites are unmarried individuals about the pretext of running their Covid evaluations, therapy and collection of trials.
