New Delhi: The forest and wildlife departments have received more than 30 applications from people who are interested in adopting a banyan tree in a century in Chandni Chowk.
The department is in the process of settling the applicant based on his experience in preserving trees.
A forest official said that following this, they could issue notice for adoption of more trees under the preservation of Delhi (DISPA) 1994.
Although part of the 13 registration allows the adoption of trees for a certain period, no tree has been adopted in Delhi.
In January this year, the department has issued a notification asking individuals, organizations and local agencies to help them keep banyan trees stay alive.
The petition has also been submitted in the Delhi High Court for its protection.
The applicant has claimed that extensive damage was caused by a tree, after the forestry department told the court that the tree officer hoped to be saved and returned to good health.
The High Court has expected a tree of around 300 years old but the forestry department has at least 150 years.
“We have received more than 300 applications.
The selection process is delayed because of Covid-19 locking.
We are checking the application and their experience in caring for trees will be considered,” said a forest official.
According to Part 13, the tree authority can be possible, by written permission, an individual, company or institution to adopt a tree for a certain period and maintain it and preserve it.
“In the past, there was no application sought for any tree adoption.
However, we can consider giving another tree to be adopted, considering the response we get after the adoption of the banyan tree,” said a senior official.
