Delhi: 5 Covid patients suffer from rectal bleeding

New Delhi: Five Covid-19 patients have suffered anal bleeding related to Cytomegalovirus in leading personal facilities here during the second wave of pandemic, the hospital authority said on Tuesday and claimed it was reported for “the first time” in immunocompetent people.
These patients faced an average problem of 20-30 days after the diagnosis of Covid-19, a doctor at Sir Ganga Ram Hospital said.
Until now it only affects immunocompromised patients, post-transplantation, cancer, AIDS, etc., but this is “the first time in India” which cases of rectal bleeding related CMV in immunocompetent patients Covid has been reported, a spokesman for the word hospital said.
According to Prof.
Anil Arora, Chair, Institute of Liver Gastroenterology and Pankreaticobiliary Sciences at the Hospital, “During the second wave of Pandemic, in April-May, we have seen five cases of CMV infection in immunocompetent patients with Covid-19.” These patients Served with pain in the stomach and bleeding during the fecal discharge.
None of them have other predisposing immunosuppression countries that contribute to this viral infection, he said.
Covid infections themselves and drugs used for care (such as steroids), indeed suppress the immunity of the patient and make them vulnerable to unusual infections with a variety of presentations, the hospital said in a statement.
“One of such opportunistic infections from CMV Cytomegaloirus in 80 to 90 percent of the Indian population in asymptomatic form because our immunity is strong enough to make it asymptomatic clinically.
Clinical presentation with secondary symptoms whose immunity is usually seen in patients whose immune is compromised,” he said , But in these five cases, all patients presented with “low number of lymphocytes (6-10 percent as normal of 20 to 40 percent)” shows a predisposing emphasis induced immunity to the simtomatic reactivation of CMV infection, doctor said.
Patients in the age group 30-70, derived from Delhi-NCR, and four have been presented with lower gastrointestinal bleeding, which is bleeding in feces and one of them is served with intestinal obstruction, the statement said.
“Two of them have massive bleeding, someone who needs an emergency life rescue operation in the form of removal of the right side of the large intestine, while one of them surrendered due to massive bleeding and severe covid-19 chest,” said the hospital.
Three other patients were treated with antivirus therapy with Ganciclovir, Arora said.
“Cytomegalovirus Colitis is confirmed by PCR testing for CMV viremia and network biopsy from the large intestine which shows the Intranuklear inclusion agency which is then confirmed because of CMV infection by certain immunohistochemical stains,” said Dr.
Sunila Jain, the pathology of a senior consultant, at the hospital.
In such cases, a high suspicion index and timely intervention in the form of early diagnosis and effective antivirus therapy can save a lot of valuable life, Oped Dr.
