Delhi: A year on, Diwali returns for Tihar inmates

New Delhi: Diwali will be a day of gala for prisoners of three prison complexes.
Last year, the Covid-19 pandemic puts given to every celebration among the prisoners, but this year about 18,000 prison inmates in Tihar, Mandoli and Rohini can have a celebration day.

Sandeep Goel, Director General, Tihar Jail, said sales of candy, candles and Diyas made by detainees saw an increase.
“In addition to selling these products through Tihar Haat, this will also be sold internally in the prison complex through the prison canteen.

“The prisoners will sing motivational songs and similar music will be played on a prison FM radio,” said an officer.
Other officers said that because of the pandemic, the prisons had stopped the visit of NGO members who helped the prisoners in pursuing vocational courses.
“A few months ago, we decided to let them come back.
They now help prisoners in their courses, also help them in making candles and Diyas candles,” he said.
