NEW DELHI: A number of physicians on Friday held protests here within a nationwide stir named by the IMA contrary to the current episodes of violence against health care professionals in certain areas of the nation, and also to require a central legislation to suppress these circumstances.
Back in Delhi, several physicians belonging to the IMA (Indian Medical Association) and also FAIMA (Federation of India Medical Association) stood together with placards outside the AIIMS primary gate to increase their voice on the matter.
FAIMA creator Dr Manish Jangra told me the AIIMS RDA is part of this demonstration but associates of IMA and FAIMA are directing the demonstration, and”we’ll be needing a demonstration at RML Delhi also at 1pm near the hostel”.
FAIMA lodges its powerful protest against the”current episodes of violence” from physicians, he explained.
The telephone for the national protest was issued with the IMA, which on Thursday had stated that approximately 3.5 lakh physicians of this institution will take part on it.
IMA national president Professor A Jayalal had stated that besides its own associates, Several organisations like the Association of Physicians of India, the Association of Surgeons of India, both the Health Care Students Network and Junior Doctor Network may participate in the demonstration.
The IMA had stated in an announcement on Thursday in Bihar and fundamental Kerala, physicians will shut their practices in the afternoon to press the need of a fundamental legislation against violence against physicians.
In the day, public discussion was organized to create a communication staff in every division of IMA to prevent such violence from occurring.
The Health Services Personnel and Medical Enforcement (Prohibition of Violence and Damage to Property) Bill, 2019, that sought to impose a prison term up to ten years for attacking on-duty physicians and other health care professionals had been opposed from the Home Ministry, stating the particular legislation wasn’t viable as health is a state issue.
“There are several fundamental health laws like the PCPNDT Act along with the Medical Institution Act.
Currently, 21 states have laws that are local, however what we want is a powerful central legislation to shield physicians from violence,” the doctors’ body said.
Examples of violence against physicians and other health care workers are reported recently from several areas of the nation, such as Jammu and Kashmir and Assam amongst other areas.
On June 1, a physician at a health centre in Hojai at Assam was allegedly attacked by walkers after the passing of a patient afflicted by Covid and pneumonia in Udali Model clinic.
Even the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) had afterwards taken cognisance of this situation and requested the Assam government and the country police chief to investigate into the alleged attack and accept”needful, preventative and punitive action” from the situation.
