New Delhi: The first phase to revive Sanjay van Lake in South Delhi has finished.
What is called a floating rafter that holds plants processed with hormones to extract excess pollutants from water has done their work.
Grid-based aeration systems to enable bubble diffusion are now installed to increase dissolved oxygen levels at the water level to catalyze the process of water purification.
An official oversee the project said the DJB had settled for a combination of restoration and aeration systems of wetlands.
“Water falls under the jurisdiction of Delhi development authorities, but we are carrying out his rejuvenation under the Lake City project,” the official said.
“There are five ponds in Sanjay Van and we chose this particular because the level of contamination was relatively high after receiving water from the non-treated sewer.

Small floating islands on this lake are also used by ducks for nesting.
The official explained that aeration techniques to increase dissolved oxygen levels must be used together with the floating guild to improve efficiency.
“In the absence of such aeration mechanism, only 10-12% of the desired purification achieved,” DJB official said.
“Plant roots provide a surface for bacteria to grow.
Dissolved oxygen in 1-2 levels will be consumed by just the oxidation process and a constant aeration need to be done to continue to drive a process forward.” The number of rafter depends on the volume of water and pollution load.
DJB officials stated that the number of floating rafter employed at a different waterbodies was 150 at Rani Khera, 294 in Jaffarpur Kalan B, 401 in Nangloi, 597 in Sanjay van and 1,375 in Sonia Vihar.
DJB Deputy Chair of Raghav Chadha said that the council worked to realize Delhi’s vision into the city of the lake.
“We have managed to clean up Sanjay van Lake and mobilize the floating barrel to improve the quality of water.
This will not only beautify the lake, but also increase the groundwater table,” he said.
