New Delhi: A 36-year-old man was arrested in Delhi in connection with a single decade case where he allegedly obtained several Airel SIM cards using fake ID evidence and used it to make international calls worth around Rs 1.76 Crore, police said on Wednesday.
The defendant, Chitresh Mohan Sharma, was arrested from the Jaitpur area on Tuesday after a raid in several locations, they said.
Sharma bought a SIM card in the name of Deepak Rawat.
He was declared a person who was proclaimed (Absonted) by the court in 2017, police said.
The additional Commissioner of the Police (Wing Wing Wing) RK Singh said that in January 2010, Aircel’s official representative filed a complaint against Rawat, which claimed to run a company called La Bella Export and Import Ltd.
In accordance with the complaint, take care of 10 cellular connections issued in his name using fake ID evidence and use it to make international roaming calls worth Rs 1.76 Crore.
“During the investigation, it was revealed that 10 postpaid numbers were released in the name of Deepak Rawat.
He asked the telecommunications company to the international roaming facility on the numbers,” Singh said.
“After some time, Aircel received information from Nepal Telecom that some people took advantage of international roaming facilities from Nepal with very high use,” he said.
The investigation revealed that these calls were diverted through Nepal to the United States and Maldives, police said.
Sharma was involved in two other similar cases, they said.
