New Delhi: North Delhi Municipal Corporation has proposed three alternative locations to move traders from Gaffar market to old and dilapidated buildings rebuilt.
The Chairman of the Civic Body Fixed Committee, Jogi Ram Jain, said the proposed location was the old primary school at Karol Bagh, the old zone headquarters in the City-SP zone near Idgah and a building near the Videocon Tower.
“We try to guarantee the merchant that they will be brought back to the market that was rebuilt after the work was completed as it was now.
But the traders decided to approach the court,” he added.
The market structure becomes weak.
Although the shopkeepers of the room were allocated on a 99-year lease, the Civil Agency issued a notification of eviction after conducting structural safety studies with the help of IIT-ROORKEE.
Harish Chitakara, President of the Market Association, said it was unfair to provide notification of evictions to traders.
“Shops are allocated with a rental of 99 years.
How can the properties be emptied suddenly?” He asked.
A city official said the IIT-Rookee earthquake engineering department visited the site on July 5 to assess market vulnerability.
Based on the results of the rebound hammer test and the speed of ultrasonic pulse it was found that the power of surface compression was unsatisfactory and the quality of the specified column was doubtful.
The report also states that the active corrosion in the building, especially in the basement, means that every maintenance without stopping corrosion will be in vain.
On July 23, Civic’s body issued a notification to the shop owner in the complex at Saraswati Marg and asked them to empty the place when the building was in a dilapidated state.
The Civic body plans to rebuild a place in public-private partnerships.
The shop owner claimed that the North Corporation project only aims to get emptied stores and similar efforts carried out in 2011 and 2016.
The market was developed in 1975 and shops were provided for 99 years in 1976.
On the ground floor, there was 75 stores, the majority of them sell cellphones and electronic goods.
Most of the shops on four upstairs are empty.
