New Delhi: Decision Support System (DSS), which has been developed by the Indian Tropical Meteorology Institute – Pune to estimate local and regional pollution sources that can affect Delhi air, said Delhi’s transportation contribution is likely to be the highest PM2.5 Delhi, around 25 %, followed by Biomass burning at 11%, on Wednesday at 8:30 a.m.

DSS is a numerical model-based framework for identifying particulatory material pollution sources in Delhi.
This estimates the source of pollution, which can affect PM2.5 Delhi, for the next 120 hours.
The system provides an estimated emission contribution from Delhi and 19 districts around it and Haryana in addition to the share of emissions from eight different sectors in Delhi with city air quality.
It predicts part of biomass burning activities in neighboring countries to PM Delhi 2.5.
According to the system, local emissions contributions – burning waste, road dust and construction – may be 2.13%, 1.74% and 3.53%, on Thursday at 8:30.
With neighboring districts that have an impact on Delhi air quality, the share of JHJARAR is expected to be 8.31% and Rohtak is likely to be 7.54% on Thursday at 8:30 a.m.
“For 19 neighboring districts, all emission sources have been considered.
The surrounding district contribution to PM2.5 Delhi has been made into the direction of the prevailing wind,” said a scientist.
Track the level of pollution in your city, DDS estimates say the share of burning biomass is likely about 10-11% from Wednesday to Friday.
“The number of fire calculations can vary in today compared to DSS predictions because the system is based on the algorithm that considers the fire burning scenario of the last 20 years,” said a scientist.
In addition to predicting local and non-local fractional contributions to PM2.5 in Delhi for the next 120 hours, the DSS provides a different scenario on the impact on Delhi air quality if emissions from one sector are reduced by 20%, 40% or 60%.
For example, if the emissions of Delhi transportation are reduced by 20%, air quality is expected to increase by 4.69% on Thursday.
Another scenario is emissions from Rohtak minus 40% which will lead to an increase in air quality by 3% on Thursday.
Sachin Ghude, Scientists and Heads, Air Quality Forecasting Group, IITM, told TII, “This unique research has made Indian agents in front of other operational institutions throughout the world that make air quality estimates.” Scientists say the system highlights the important source of emissions responsible for degraded air quality in Delhi and suggests possible solutions for policy makers.
The system can help the institution concerned to take the necessary actions to reduce emissions.
“We identify emissions from various sources and from neighboring districts.
We trace them in the model using the Tracer approach.
This system can estimate the emission contribution of eight different sectors from Delhi and 19 districts with Delhi air quality,” said Gaurav Govardhan, scientist in IITM.
