Cairo: The World Health Organization said Thursday the Delta variant has caused a “surge” in the Coronavirus outbreak triggering “fourth wave” in the Middle East, where the vaccination rate remains low.
Global Health Body said strains were very transmitting, first detected in India, has been recorded in 15 of the 22 countries and regions under the scope, stretching from Morocco to Pakistan.
“The circulation of the Delta variant triggered a surge in case and Covid-19 death in the number of countries that increased in Who’s Eastern Mediterranean region,” he said in a statement.
“Most new cases and patients who are hospitalized are people who are not vaccinated.
We are now in the fourth wave of Covid-19 throughout the region,” said Ahmed Al-Mandhari, Director of WHO’s Eastern Mediterranean region.
In the last week of July, “only 41 million people, or 5.5 percent, from the area’s population, was fully vaccinated,” WHO said.
Infection increased by 55 percent, and the death was 15 percent, last month compared to the previous month.
More than 310,000 cases and 3,500 deaths have been recorded every week.
Countries such as Tunisia, who have suffered the largest number of Covid-19 deaths in North Africa, have struggled to contain the plague.
Critical deficiency oxygen tank and intensive care bed has stretched a regional health care system capacity.

According to recent papers in the journal Virology, the number of viruses found in the first test of patients with a Delta variant is 1,000 times higher than the patient in the first wave of the virus in 2020, greatly enhancing its transmission.
