Mumbai: A senior citizen, who suffers from lung disease but is fully vaccinated with both doses, has become the first fatality associated with the Delta Plus Covid variant in the city.
The 63-year-old housewife died of Covid at the end of July, and the sequencing of the genome confirmed on Wednesday that she had Delta-Plus.
He has become the second Delta Maharashtra plus death.
The country now has 65 cases of variants, including 11 in Mumbai.
“People should not panic but continue to wear masks and maintain physical distances.
Patients have a lot of co-morbidity and the condition of the underlying lungs,” said Dr.
Mangala Gomare, BMC executive health worker.
Civil officials said Delta Plus victims were detected with Covid on July 21 and died on July 27, after three days in the ICU.
Six of the close contact was found covid-positive.
“The contact samples found positively sent for the original genome sequencing.
From them, two became positive for Delta-Plus and the other results were awaited,” said Dr.
Mangala Gomare, BMC executive health worker.
His family members are all without symptoms.
The patient is a case of known interstitial lung disease and obstructive airways that he took oxygen care at home before Covid infection, Gomare said, adding he did not have a history of travel or reinfection.
The initial symptoms are dry cough, loss of taste, body pain and headache.
BMC said he was vaccinated with both doses of covishield.
Delta Plus Variant or ‘AY.1’ has mutated from the Delta variant which is very translucent (B.1.617.2) which was first isolated in Maharashtra earlier this year.
The state reported a surge in covid cases and death on Thursday.
This adds 6,388 cases, the highest in a week, and death across 200, the highest in almost 12 days.
Officials said 56 deaths from Raigad Regency were added to the calculation on Thursday.
Mumbai continues to report under 300 cases and death remains in one digit.
With the addition of 281 cases and seven deaths, the total case in the city rose to 7.4 lakh and the death touched 15,975.
Nandurbar dominated by tribes has become the second district in Maharashtra Utara to become free covid, after Dhule on August 9, Bhandara District from the Vidarbha region also became Covid’s free earlier this month.
Active patients who were active in Nandurjar were sent home from the hospital on Wednesday night.
There are no fresh Covid cases that appear in the district since August 2.
