Ahmedabad: More than 80% of new Covid-19 cases in India are Delta variants (also identified with B.1.617.2), Dr.
N K Arora, chair with the Indian SARS-COV-2 genomic consortium on Monday.
This ratio is much higher in Gujarat, disclosing case analysis in May and June.
Genomic sequencing by Gujarat Biotechnology Research Center (GBRC) shows that more than 90% of cases in the state of Delta variant.
According to data available on the GBRC website, of the 174 samples were analyzed, 158 or 91% of positive patient samples were found from the Delta variant.
Other variants found in this country include B.1.1.7 (Alpha), B.1.617.1, B.1.36.8 and B.1.
The sample of Vadodara, Chhota Udepur, Ahmedabad, Mahisagar, Gandhinagar, Anand and Mehsana, among others.
“There are more heterogeneities until the beginning of the second wave, with some cases of alpha and beta variants recorded in the state.
But after the second wave, the Delta variant remains the dominant.
In June, the variant was found in more than 95% of sequencing,” said the expert The genome sequencing of Gandhinagar.
“Trends will continue in July, with all eyes on delta-pluses and other mutations.” Because the Delta variant, Gujarat witnessed the worst phase of a pandemic with very high everyday cases and a high mortality rate.
What does the results mean for the country? Dr.
Urvesh Shah, Professor & Head of the Microbiology Department at the GCS Hospital, said that it could be endemic because of higher adaptability and greater distribution.
“This is the survival for viruses too.
Delta has become the dominant variant in several countries when adjusted and mutated.
Faster replicability and lower virulence can improve the life of the variant,” he said.
“Delta variants somehow adapted to the host, and also showed the escape of immune.
Thus, in the long run, we may not be surprised if the endemic form (recurring health condition) is not a pandemic,” he said.
“RNA viruses like Covid-19 depend on faster mutations to survive.
Steps like vaccination have slowed mutations.” The Delta variant, was first detected in India in October 2020, it was more transmitting and severe compared to its predecessor.
Experts say that it is now in more than 80 countries, and has caused fresh waves in countries such as the US.
The biggest worries of experts are their ability to avoid immunity, causing re-infection in some cases.
