New Delhi: Democracy deteriorates throughout the world with many countries, including India, taking unsolicited and unnecessary actions especially during the pandemic, said reports released by the International Institute for Democracy and Assistance Election (Idea International).
For the fifth consecutive year, in 2020, the countries turned against the authoritarianism of the number of those who enjoyed democratization.
International ideas expect this trend to continue up to 2021.
For 2021, according to group assessment, the world calculates 98 democracies – the lowest number in several years – as well as 20 “hybrids” governments including Russia, Morocco and Turkey and 47 authoritarian regimes including China, Saudi Arabia, Ethiopia and Iran.
Globally, more than one in four people living in ‘backward’ democracy, the proportion rose to more than two in three with the addition of an authoritarian regime or ‘hybrid’.
The number of ‘backsliding’ democracy also doubled in the past decade, according to a report entitled ‘State of Democracy Global Report 2021: Building Resilience in the Pandemic’ era.
The introduction to the report was written by former Commissioner of the Main Election Dr.
S Y Quraishi.
Interestingly, the United States has been included in the annual list of ‘backsliding’ democracy for the first time.
This is classified as a ‘high-performance’ democracy.
India is classified as ‘medium distance’ democracy which also experiences ‘backward’.
