US health officials have ratified the third dose of Covid-19 vaccine from Pfizer Inc.
and Moderna Inc.
for people with a compromised immune system, based on evidence that two standard shots offer unsuppled protection in the population.
This is what we know about who will qualify for additional shots: How immunocompromised is defined? Food administration and drugs update the authorization of emergency use given to shooting from PFIZER, developed with German Bontech partners, as well as vaccines from modern to leave the third dose for people who have received organ transplants, or those who have the same body’s immune system Weakened.
Health officials estimate that less than 3% of American adults will be candidates for the third dose.
US centers for controlling and prevention of diseases say the third dose is recommended for sufficient or very immunocompromised people.
They include people who receive care for solid tumor cancer and blood cancer, such as lymphoma or leukemia; Patients who have undergone two years of bone marrow transplantation or still use drugs to suppress their immune system; and patients with sophisticated or untreated HIV infections.
The CDC guidelines also include people who currently take high-dose steroids and biological-suppressors of immune systems, including drugs for Crohn disease, rheumatoid arthritis and plaque psoriasis.
Do I need a recipe? What about insurance? CDC said on Friday that people who are looking for a third vaccine dose do not require recipes or recommendations from health care providers.
They will prove themselves that they qualify on vaccination sites.
The vaccine itself has been purchased by the federal government and distributed for free, but hospitals, pharmacies and other providers can collect insurance companies for administrative fees.
People who are covered by Medicare, a government health plan for people over the age of 65, who qualify for additional vaccine doses can accept it at no cost.
Medicare will continue to pay for an average vaccine provider of $ 40 for each Covid-19 vaccine administration.
American health insurance plans, trade groups representing most private health insurance companies, said health insurance providers will continue to cover all administrative costs for Covid-19 vaccines as needed.
What do other countries do? More and more countries have started offering the third vaccine dose for vulnerable populations based on evidence that vaccine protection can decrease from time to time or may not be strong enough to the Delta variant that spreads rapidly.
Israel began offering the third shot from the Pfizer Vaccine or Biontech to people over 60 in July.
On Friday, the state lowered the age limit to 50 and said it would also offer additional doses for health workers.
Health clinics in Moscow began offering Booster Shots in July to people who were vaccinated six months or more.
Indonesia began to provide booster shots produced by Moderna to medical workers in July and are considering extra doses for wider use.
England, Germany and France plan to start rolling booster for parents and vulnerable in September.
The World Health Organization has stopped the covid-19 vaccine amplifier to at least the end of September to allow inoculation at least 10% of the population of each country.
