Dharwad: Flannery O’Connor is a novelist and American story writer respected by national book award for fiction in 1972 – he died in 1964, aged 39 years.
His stories have been well received in English literature.
Dharwad Writer Buru Bevinagidad, which is also the head of the program on all Radio India, has translated five stories to Kannada and compiled them in the ‘Dakkada Kaadu’ book.
When the story is translated into the Dharwad dialect, they get good traction among Kannada literature too.
Bevinagidad, who has written 11 books on Kannada, said he decided to bring O’Connor to Kannada readers after reading the story ‘a good man is hard to find’.
“I am disturbed when a story that focuses on how human faith is destroyed.
Then I read the other stories and decided to translate it,” he said.
In his introduction, veteran writer O L Nagabhushanaswami said that the stories of O’Connor can be connected with Kannada readers.
“This book introduces O’Connor’s thoughts well, and confirmed why the story needed in Kannada,” he added.
Hema Pattanashetti, another author, said O’Connor had explored sensitive problems such as holocaust, racial intolerance, and regional imbalances.
“This anthology has issued such a problem.
Because the stories are in the North Karnataka dialect, this book has implemented a new formula in telling Kannada,” he added.
