Bhubaneswar: 221 of 7,300 post offices in the state do not have network connectivity.
Most of these post offices are located in districts dominated by tribes.
Because the field is hilly and the lack of cellular towers, their offices do not have internet or internet facilities.
Officials said 202 of the 221 post offices were in the district of Malkangiri, Coraput and Ladydom.
“19 The remaining post offices are in the Sambalpur and Jharsuguda District,” Swain Suvendu, Head of Postmaster General, Odisha, said.
He added that this post office staff fed daily transaction data and other works through offline mode.
If they are lucky, they walk to the nearest tower where data is uploaded automatically with a faster internet connection.
If they can’t find a nearby network, their account was taken to the nearest sub-post office to upload, he explained.
According to the Odisha Economic Survey (OES) report 2018-19, around 11,000 of 51,311 villages in the state do not have cellular connectivity.
Of the 11,000 villages, almost 10,000 are under the affected area of the left wing extremism.
The state wireless tele-density was 76.15% compared to the national average of 87.45% on January 31 last year.
The government report has stated that there are special funding requirements to establish more car towers in these areas revealed to increase telephoto density in the state.
“Post India tries to reach people through agents to popularize the post insurance scheme and other products.
This has recruited around 500 agents in the state for this purpose.
Odisha has around 7,300 post offices with 2.2 crore depositors.
Most people have a life insurance account (Pli) and rural postal post (RPLI) at the post office regardless of other savings schemes, “officials said.
Das Das, an activist from Kalangandi District, said several branch post offices in the tribal area of the default district did not have a network connection.
“Because of the lack of network problems, real-time supervision of this post office account will be affected and some corrupt staff will try to explore funds.
Even some branch post offices do not have adequate infrastructure to run offices,” he added.
He said the Ministry of Communication, who runs the post department and also has a BSNL network, can easily install cellular networks in areas that cannot be accessed to facilitate the work of the post office.
“Even network connectivity will also help people, especially students to access online classes easily in this tribal district,” he added.
