WASHINGTON: The US government announced Wednesday it’s suspending for six weeks some tariffs on Britain, India and also four European countries while it functions to solve a dispute over electronic services taxation.
“The United States is concentrated on discovering a viable alternative to a variety of important issues linked to global taxation, such as our issues with electronic services taxation,” US Trade Representative Katherine Tai said in an declaration.
The suspension, that applies to Austria, Italy, Spain and Turkey, comes in the end of yearlong investigation into taxation that Washington stated discriminated against large US tech firms such as Apple, Amazon, Google and Facebook.
However, USTR made evident it had the choice to enforce the duties on products from the states that embraced the taxation.
President Joe Biden’s government is pushing to get a 15 percent international minimum company tax which intends to solve the problem of corporations sheltering earnings in low-tax states.
“The United States remains committed to reaching a consensus on global tax problems via the Oecd and G20 procedures,” Tai said.
“Today’s activities offer time for those discussions to continue to create progress whilst keeping the choice of imposing tariffs…
if justified in the future” USTR at January suspended 25 percent tariffs about $1.3 billion in French products enforced in the electronic taxation dispute.
