Chennai: As part of an effort to modernize the state forensic department, the chairman of the minister on Saturday inaugurated a new DNA profile search tool in the secretariat.
New devices will help track abandoned children, criminals between countries and sexual predators of children among others.
Officials said Tamil Nadu had become the first country in the country to get sophisticated devices.
Developed by the State Forensic Science Department, it can be used to create the profile of victims of human trafficking and help track it so they can be reunited with their parents.
This tool can also help in identifying missing children, tracking criminals from other countries that have been sheltered in Tamil Nadu, and help identify unknown bodies and create a Sheeter-Sheeteter profile and those who die of disasters natural.
Of the 14 units that form the state forensic science department, DNA profiling is the main component.
The press release from the Secretariat said that some countries have such tools that help them create effective mechamsim to launch hard action against criminal violators.
A police officer said that the search for Forensic DNA profiles also can also be used to resolve cases such as rape, sexual violence and murder.
“Fingerprints of crime scenes, small particles on victims of sexual violence and murder can be traced to criminals.” The current structure in the department takes time to identify and isolate the required sample DNA.
However, the newly introduced tool, which has a sophisticated kit, will be able to provide accurate results in a shorter time, even for the most challenging cassette samples, the officer said.
