Chennai: Greater Chennai Corporation has planned to increase the capacity of sterilization operations in the three animal birth control centers (ABC) in Kannamapetai, Pulianthope and Lloyds Colony in the city.
The main reason behind this step is that the number of unsolved community dogs in the city has risen around 90% in the past two and a half years.
According to GCC data, there are around 42,000 dogs not stabbing in the city in October 2018.
This figure has increased to 81,000 in February this year.
In a 28-month downsizing, the GCC centers can only sterilize 24,134 dogs, show official data.
Dogs that are not mercy are captured from various corporate zones and brought to these centers, where they are sterilized, immunized and then released back to their streets taken from.
The Blue Cross and the community for the prevention of cruelty of animals (SPCA) also conducts this ABC program.
Recently, a proposal was debated to build a TwostTorey building in each ABC center to accommodate 20 cages along with facilities for staff related to this program.
Project, taglined “Chennai-Care for Animals Project (C-CRAP) ‘, will cost the corporate fees around ₹ 9.2 Crore.
According to the GCC document, after updating it is done, the operational cost of each ABC Center will be around ₹ 13.7 lakh a month, which translates to Rs 4.9 Crore a year for three centers.
