Hyderabad: Beaten by a Covid-19 pandemic, eye contribution in Telangana and throughout India dropped more than half for 2020-21 compared to the same period in 2019-2020.
It automatically regarding patients who are waiting for the corneal transplant and currently there is a great pulse of local experts.
According to the numbers of the Bank India (Ebai) EYE association, compared with 9185 eye donations during 2019-20, Telangana saw 4122 donations at 2020-21.
Throughout India, between April 2019 and March 2020, the country saw 50,953 eye donations.
But during April 2020 and March 2021, only 18,359 corneas were collected.
While estimated at 25,000,000 new cases of corneal blindness occurred in India, the number of corneal transplants was reduced to 12,998 between April 2020 and March 2021 of 27,075 corneal transplants in the previous year according to Ebai.
One reason for the decline has become a patient who promised to contribute their eyes but contracted Covid-19 and surrendered to him.
“Many patients give up on Covid-19.
As a result, we cannot use corneas for transplants even though it can be used for our laboratory research.
The benefits are at all times height in the past few years,” said Dr.
M Ramalingam, supervisor of the city-based elementary school .
The corneal transplant is the only drug that is known for the Blindness of the cornea, which is made possible by a healthy corneal contribution by individuals for their deaths, experts said.
Sarojini Devi’s Eye Hospital managed by the state has the continuation of the current 500 patients who are waiting for the corneal transplant, more than 2 times a general general.
In most cases, corneal blindness can be cured with corneal transplants but the low availability of donors is the main obstacle that experts say.
Corneal is the main cause of blindness in India and an estimated 2 million Indians are influenced by corneal blindness where more than 1.2 million are under the age of 12 years.
This can be caused by corneal, injury or infection.
“The current Cornea collection in India is able to serve only a quarter of patients who need corneal transplant operations.
There has been a decrease in the Corneal collection.
National estimates showed a decrease close to 60 percent because of the pandemic,” said Dr.
Sunita Chaurasia, Medical Director, Ramayamma International Eye Bank, LV Prasad The Eye Institute (LVPEI) added that it is important for people who promise the need for eye donations to share their promises, and will donate their eyes, with their family members, and ask them to execute the same after their deaths.
“Eye donations can occur only after one’s death and agree to their family members.
By donating eyes, we can see vision to someone who cannot see, and maintain the memories of the people who died still alive,” he added.
