Coimbatore: Head of four Mutt from all countries has asked the State Authority not to treat the temple equivalent to other encroachment and destroy them during the drive removal of encroachment.
Claimed that the two temples were destroyed by other encroachment along with other encroachment of the Bunds of Muthanankulamp recently more than 100 years, Mutt’s head said such actions would erode the trust owned by people in the government.
In a joint press meeting in Coimbatore on Tuesday, Ponif Perur Adhinam Shantalinga, Ponif Siravai Adhinam Gowmara Mutt Kumaragurupara Swamigal, Pontiff of Varani Peetam, Manikanda Swamigal and Sri Shivalingeshwara Swamigal from Kamatchipuri Adhinam said the demolition had hurt mass religious sentiments.
They said that the temples were rich in history and worshiped by generations of people.
They said that temples in other parts of the country also face similar fate.
A three-centuri-old Dewi Mariamman temple was destroyed at Chennai near the Basin Bridge train station and a two-century old temple was revealed at Ilandhiyendal in Madurai.
Hantthalinga Adigalar said that it was a Hindu tradition to offer river gods along the river and Lake Bund.
A structure built by individuals and temples built and worshiped by a community should not be considered equal and destroyed, he said.
If in all temples it must be removed, the State Authority must consult with the head of religion and jointly explore ways to shift the temple without hurting religious sentiments.
“The rules of religion must be followed when shifting and the head of religion will guide the authorities,” he said.
