Don’t practice communal politics in Assam: Akhil Gogoi to CM

GUWAHATI: Jailed activist Akhil Gogoi, granted parole for two days by an NIA court, has said that he was “aware of all the conspiracies that are being hatched against him” and appealed to Assam chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma for ensuring that the norms of traditional democracy are sustained.
“The political scenario in Assam is changing towards that of Uttar Pradesh-type politics.
There is only communal politics across Assam now.
There is no discussion on solving the main issues of the state.
We have to save our democracy.
My appeal to the chief minister is that he should not practice UP-type politics here but ensure that the norms of traditional democracy are sustained.
The politics based on democratic principles in Assam should not be turned into a communal and fascist one,” the Raijor Dal chief said after reaching his ancestral village of Selenghat in Jorhat district.
Akhil returned home after 18 months in jail to a rousing welcome at his home on Saturday where thousands gathered to meet him with the traditional Assamese gamosa.
Crediting his mother for the resilience to fight for a cause, he said: “She inspires me everyday.
Tonight, I will sleep with her.
There can be no place more warm than a mother’s bosom.” It may be recalled that the NIA special court on Friday while hearing a petition had granted him parole for 48 hours to meet his ailing son and mother in Guwahati and Jorhat respectively.
The court, however, forbade him from meeting people of his constituency due to the prevailing pandemic situation.
Akhil said that four-time Congress MLA Rupjyoti Kurmi, who resigned from the assembly to join the BJP on June 21, has committed a mistake for which the people will not forgive him.
“The people had elected him so that he could be their voice.
For this betrayal of people’s trust, he will lose (if he seeks re-election) even if he spends Rs 100 crore,” he asserted.
“I never thought that one day I would become an MLA.
I won the elections from jail and I do not view myself as an MLA.
But I swear by my mother that I’m not going to be a corrupt or fraudulent MLA and will always be accessible to all.
I will always raise my voice for the people as I have always done,” he added.
