PATNA: Bihar CM Nitish Kumar on Tuesday maintained a high speed inspection assembly via video-conferencing in the aftermath of heavy downpour from the catchment areas of Gandak river in Nepal from the previous 24 hours.
Throughout the inspection, the CM asked the district magistrates (DMs) of West Champaran, East Champaran and Gopalganj districts, where Gandak crosses at the top north-west portion of north Bihar, to stay on top alert and maintain a particular vigil about the rising tendency of flooding waters at the lake.
The DMs also have been requested to notify the households residing in the low-lying regions aside from the Gandak river regarding the flooding waters via intensive propaganda from loudspeakers, so the activity of evacuation, in case circumstance demands, may be implemented speedily.
The DMs of 3 districts were attached to the assembly via video conferencing.
The officers of their water resources section (WRD) and the disaster management division (DMD) were put to the alert.
The CM requested the WRD officials to depute its engineers all exposed points of this embankments along with Gandak river to make sure its own protection.
During the assembly, Nitish farther requested the officials to maintain the groups of NDRF and SDRF, which can be deputed from the districts, even in large alert manner so that rapid action may be taken should any negative situation occurs.
Before, the WRD secretary Sanjiv Hans advised the CM there has been a chance of large increase in the water amount of Gandak river in the aftermath of heavy downpour in its own catchment regions in Nepal.
Hans also promised the CM the WRD was completely alert in the aftermath of heavy release of water from the river in Nepal side.
The WRD Union Sanjay Kumar Jha was present in the assembly.
An senior WRD engineer told TOI on Tuesday a large portion of Nepal was watching heavy downpour for the past few days due to the early birth of Monsoon there.
“Excessive rain over the last few times on nearby foothills have contributed to dangerously significant water levels from most of the tributaries that match in Gandak river from central Nepal.
Now, all of the rain waters are currently working towards the Bihar boundaries.
The majority of the rivers in central Nepal are nowadays flowing over their various hazard marks, that has resulted in concern at the Bihar government,” the scientist, that didn’t wish to be recognized, explained.
