Drains, sewers being cleaned on war footing

Written by news2in

Greater Noida: With monsoon expected to hit NCR soon, work of cleaning drains and sewers is underway in both Noida and Greater Noida.
While the work is expected to go on till July 15 as tendering was delayed due to Covid lockdown, drain pipe and sump wells have been installed at Mahamaya flyover cloverleaf near Sector 44 and the DND loop to prevent water logging respectively.
Gurvinder Singh, senior manager (water) of Noida Authority, said, “We have completed the work of installing a sump well near Dalit Prerna Sthal, the main waterlogging site in the city.
However, we are waiting to lay the 70 metre pipeline which will carry the outflow of water from the pump into the Yamuna river via Okhla bird sanctuary as clearance from Lucknow is yet to come for the pipe laying work.
Once the sanction comes through, we can complete the work in two days.
If there is a delay, we have made an alternate arrangement of diverting the water to a low-lying area near the DND loop.” He added that the cost of the work is about Rs 50 lakh.
According to Singh the authority has identified seven major points of waterlogging in the city.
Similarly, drainage systems have been checked for blockage in low-lying areas, including underpasses in NTPC-City centre area, Chhalera, Atta market and Rajnigandha crossing.
In Greater Noida, there’s a delay in cleaning of residential sewers and drains due to concrete ramps built by residents over drain chambers in front of their houses.
While contractors have been directed by GNIDA to remove these slabs and carry out the cleaning work, oxygen cylinders are provided to the labourers cleaning the sewers through manholes.
GNIDA has desilted about 350 km of sewer line and checked majority exit points of sewers for blockages so far.
