New Delhi: The Missile Supersonic (SMART) assistance torpedo system, which has a far greater range than a conventional torpedo to target enemy submarines, successfully tested from Wheeler Island in Odisha on Monday.
“Smart system is the next generation torpedo torpedo shipping system designed to improve the ability of the anti-navy submarine warfare.
The medium-range supersonic missile carries a torpedo, a parachute delivery system and release mechanism,” said an official Drdo.
Smart system, which is only “demonstrators technology” as it now, has a range of “several times”, which is a conventional torpedo of 20-40 km.
The tube-based missile system, which issued a torpedo with a parachute near the target, consisted of advanced technology such as solid two-stage propulsion, electro-mechanical actuator and precision navigation inertia.
“Missiles are launched from Ground’s cellular launchers and can cover various distances.
A number of Drdo Laboratories develop various technologies for this system, while the industry participates in the development and production of various sub-systems,” he said.
Happy Drdo, Defense Minister Rajnath Singh said the development of smart systems “is the perfect example of building a futuristic defense system” domestically.
