Hyderabad: Defense Research and Development Organization (DRDO) accidentally developed the high strength of metanctable beta titanium alloy containing vanadium, iron and aluminum, TI-10V-2FE-3al on industrial scale for applications in aerospace structural strike.
This has been developed by Defense Metallurgical Research Laboratory (DMRL), Drdo Laboratory based in Hyderabad.
These alloys have been used by many developed countries in several times as a substitute which is beneficial for traditional Ni-Cr-Mo structural steel which is relatively heavier to achieve weight savings.
“Excellent characteristics of the high-power ratio of TI-10V-2A-3 alloys that facilitate complex configurable components for applications with significant weight savings potential.
Some components that can be forged from this alloy include Slat Tracks Flap, landing wheels, and drop links at Landing Gear, among several others, “said the Ministry of Defense.
Titanium alloy high strength is unique because of their higher strength, ductility, fatigue, and fracture, making them more attractive for aircraft structural applications.
In addition, the cost of their lifetime is relatively lower, due to superior corrosion resistance compared to steel, is an effective exchange to justify the use of this expensive material too.
DMRL has selected raw materials, melting alloys, thermo-mechanical processing, ultrasonic-based non destructive evaluation (NDE), heat treatment, mechanical characterization, and type of certification in active collaboration with several institutions.
The Aeronautics Development Agency (Ada) has identified more than 15 steel components that can be replaced by TI-10V-2FE-3al forgings in the near future with 40% weight savings potential.
Landing Gear Drop Link is the first component that is falsified by existing in terms of, Bengaluru with DMRL involvement and certified to meet air needs.
Defense Minister Union, Rajnath Singh, has congratulated DRDO and the industry for custom development of high titanium beta metastable alloys that will be useful for aerospace structural strike.
Secretary, R & D Defense Department and Drdo Chairperson, G Satheesh Reddy, praised special efforts by the team involved in the development of this technology customary.
