Drill to flood underpasses to check if they are rain-ready

Gurgaon: To avoid a rerun of waterlogging at underpasses during monsoon, the Gurugram Metropolitan Development Authority (GMDA) has decided to carry out a drill in all the underpasses to check the capacity of the suction pumps so that corrective action can be taken if required.
The drill will start on Wednesday, officials said.
Talking about the exercise, a GMDA official said that they will use fire tenders to fill the underpasses with water and check if the pumps are functioning properly.
“All the underpasses have a duct where the water goes and then the water is pumped out of that duct using the suction pumps.
Through this exercise we want to check the efficiency of the pumps,” said the official.
He added that since the capacity of the pumps is quite high and there are several underpasses in the city, the process will go on for days.
“We have already written to the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) for their cooperation in the process,” said the official.
Once the exercise is completed for the underpasses on the national highway, GMDA will carry out the same exercise for Golf Course Road as well.
Flooding in the underpasses is a major problem the city faces during rains.
It took a day to drain the inundated Genpact Chowk underpass on Golf Course Road last year.
Similarly, the underpasses at Rajiv chowk and Hero Honda Chowk have also faced waterlogging issues during the rainy season.
This comes a month before the city is likely to receive the monsoon showers.
GMDA has also started the work to to set up a flood control room to monitor areas affected by waterlogging and take measures to address the problem.
The authority has already invited agencies to operate the flood control room and repair the stormwater drains before June 25.
Officials said the control room would be set up at a cost for Rs 70 lakh and work in coordination with different government agencies.
It will also have a helpline for people to lodge complaints related to waterlogging.
