Dhaka: Bangladesh Police have arrested Hossain Iqbal, the main suspect responsible for guarding the Koran in the Puja Durga place in Comilla, from Cox’s Bazar on Thursday night, reported local media.
Faruk Ahmed, Supervisor of Police Commissioner (SP), said Iqbal was arrested from Shugandha Beach around 10:10 a.m.
on Thursday, reported Dhaka TRIBUNE.
After the arrest at Cox’s Bazar, Hossain – “The man responsible for maintaining the Quran in the place of Puja Comilla who triggered an attack on Hinduism” – was taken to the Comilla police line on Friday.
On Wednesday, Iqbal was identified as the main suspect after the police examined CCTV recording.
According to Dhaka Tribune, the new CCTV footage showed Hossain Iqbal’s meeting with two caregivers from the local temple at night.
Looks as if the trio meets, and that the Koran, which is believed to be the same holy book used later, is placed in the temple, the publication said.
Previous reports have suggested that at least three people were killed and 60 reported injured including journalists, police and lay people, in communal violence during the Puja Durga celebration at Chandpur Hajigja Uphazila.
The development came after communal violence broke out in several places in Bangladesh after the news breaking up on social media about the alleged disability of the Koran at the Puja Durga place at the Bank of Nanuar Digi.
Some Puja places were damaged in the Chandpur area, Chittagong, Gazipur, Bandarban, Chapainawabganj, and Moulvibazar, reported Dhaka Tribune.
Violence that began in Cumilla during Durga Puja has spread to other parts and previously there were reports of violence, combustion and murder of various parts of the country.
