Den Haag: Dutch archaeologists say on Wednesday they have dug the canal and Roman roads near the ancient military camps which this week registered in the UNESCO World Heritage Site List.
The canal width, more than 10 meters (33 feet) and the road was found last week near Nijmegen Eastern City, settlement of the major Roman era with a permanent military base awarded UNESCO status.
They are believed to have been built and used by the Roman military, according to RAAP, the largest consultation in the country for archeology and cultural history.
Nijmegen was in Rhine, the border of the Roman Empire at the time, he said in a statement, adding that the invention was “unique” for the territory of the country.
Many Roman soldiers are placed along the rivers and canals may connect Nijmegen and Rhine and are used to transport troops, supplies and building materials.
The Roman highway, with the original gravel sidewalk was preserved, providing new insights into the road network of around 2,000 years ago, Eric Noord, who led the project, told AFP.
