Asked: migrating birds have begun to arrive at Chilika after flying for thousands of miles.
“We have seen more than 22,000 birds from 62 different species on the lake 1,100 sq.km Vast,” said Lakat Chandra Mishra, assistant forest conservator (ACF), division of the Wildlife Chilika.
More than 5,000 have been swooping in Sanctuary Bird Nalaban 15.69 sq.Km in the lake, he said.
Birds began to arrive in the second week of October, about a week later the previous year, he said.
Among the migration birds are North Pintail, Gadwall, Shoveller and Common Coot.
Some birds fly near Chilika and may land so low-cost water level.
“We hope that more birds will arrive at the end of October,” he added.
A total of 12, 42,826 birds from 190 different species were calculated in the previous blue winter lagoon.
The water level of the lake is high due to prolonged rain in September and October.
“Migrating birds find it difficult to get food on a submerged water body,” said U DEV, an ornologist.
