Chandigarh: elderly patients over the age of 60 have been found with more antibodies after recovering from Covid-19 than younger in Punjab, according to research conducted by a team of doctors from the Institute of Science and Research, Bathinda, and all the Indian Institute of Medical Sciences, New Delhi.
This study found a strong correlation between the level of antibodies and age.
Other factors such as the severity of the disease, hospitalization or the need for oxygen or mechanical ventilation causes an increase in the antibody level but not statistically significant.
Higher antibodies are recorded at male participants.
The association between clinical characteristics of infection and the formation of neutralization antibodies has not been analyzed well, prospective studies are carried out to check the correlation of various factors such as age, gender, disease severity and comorbidity related to antibody responses in patients restored.
A total of 92 patients were recruited at the Adesh Institute of Medical Illices and Research based on Outpatient from 1 August 2020 to 28 February 2021, between five and eight weeks of post-onset of Covid symptoms.
Of the total participants, 37% were above the age group 60 while 44.6% were in the bracket aged 36-60 and the remaining below 35.
Most of them suffered mild infections (51.1%) while the significant number had been medium infection Until weighing (48.9%) and hospitalization needed.
About 46% of patients needed oxygen therapy during their stay and 19.6% needed high flow oxygen or mechanical ventilation.
Except for one participant, all antibodies are developed.
Patients, who failed to develop antibodies, were diagnosed with cases of granulomatosis (GPA) – a condition that caused inflammation of blood vessels – and received rituximab maintenance therapy.
The median antibody titres are 61AU / ML in the range of 1-135.
In comparing the level of antibodies among different age groups, older age is associated with a statistically significant antibody response.
The 60-year-old age group has a significantly statistically significant antibody titer compared to the age group below 35.
The antibody level in patients over the age of 60 is recorded at 71 AU / mL while younger patients in the age group below 35 have 28 AU / ML and 53 AU / ML in the age group between 35 and 60.
An antibody titers of 66.5 au / mL were recorded in men’s participants to 55.5 AU / ML in female patients.
The highest antibody titers of 135 au / ml of this study were found in patients recovering from mild infections.
The average antibody among severe patients is 67AU / ML against 59 au / mL in moderate patients and 54 au / ml in patients who experience mild infections.
