Coimbatore: The elderly couple, who consumed rat poison in their homes in Muthu Garden in Arisikanlaya near Madukkarai here on January 31, died at Coimbatore Medical College and Hospital (CMCH) without responding to treatment on Friday.
Police said the 64-year-old F Partholomiyo and his 60-year-old wife B Manonmanman suffered nervous interference and took extreme steps because they did not have enough money for their medical expenses.
They survived by Son P John Bosco Francis, 28, video editor.
A police officer said Partholomiyo worked at Lakshmi Machine Work Ltd.
in Periyanenickenkenpalayam and had taken voluntary pensions in 2016.
“With retirement allowances, he built a house.
His wife had breast cancer.
Partholomiyo spent the remaining money for his care.” Around 9pm January 31, said the officer, Partholomiyo consumed liquor mixed with rat poison.
“His wife also consumed the poison mixed in water and they went to sleep.
When Manonmanman woke up the next morning, he found that her husband struggled to breathe.
He told his neighbors, who took them to CMC.” Parttholomiyo died without responding to treatment about 1.10 in the morning Friday and Manonmanman died a little later at 1.38 in the morning.
