Elephant block traffic for 4 hours in Ramgarh, one trampled to death in Dumka

RAMGARH / DUMKA: A nine elephant herd stopped the movement of the vehicle on Jalan Temple of Ramgarh-Rajrappa along the stretch of Chitarpur for four hours and injured local vendors on Tuesday morning.
In Dumka District, a 45-year-old man, Videshi Mandal, from Sarsabad Village was trampled to death by a wild elephant separate from his flock on Tuesday.
Tusker is believed to have sneaked into Dumka from the Jamtara district bordering.
It looks roam around the residential area and on a busy main road near Maharo between Dumka and Bhagalpur.
Jumbo’s appearance suddenly on the road triggered panic between commuters.
Officials, however, said the Ministry of Forestry sent a quick response team to expel Jumbos to the forest and reopen the busy road after about four hours.
Division Forest Officer (DFO), Ramgarh, Ved Prakash Cambodia, said, “The nine flock of his people roamed the forest around the Rajrappa temple over the past two months.
They often come out on the road and it is difficult to know their movements.” He added, “acting on Jumbo information on the road, a team sent to drive them away.
We maintain close alertness to movement and ivory they usually roam between night and early days.
“Local sources said a man on his way to the Temple of Rajrappa in his bicycle suffered several injuries after the herd attacked him .
He was treated at a local hospital.
Ajay Panda, a senior priest with the Temple of Rajrappa said the Temple Managing Committee has asked the local authorities to drive elephants from near the temple for the safety of worshipers.
Meanwhile, Dumka DFO Abirup Sinha said the footsteps of the elephant who killed the mandal was being examined to ascertain whether it was the same elephant who had roamed the Dumka and the district side by side in recent years and killed more than a dozen people.
