Coimbatore: The Ministry of Forestry has formed a special team for Nab Poachers who cut ivory from the elephant carcass, which was found in the reserve forest Sadayagrarai near the Kattupatti tribal settlement at Udumalpet Forest Range of Anamalai Tiger Reserve (ATR).
The Udumalpet forest range staff has found a carcass on Sunday night.
Bullet injuries were not found in the carcass, said the Sukumar forest veterinary officer.
“The hunters have used ax to remove the left ivory.
Only experienced hunters can remove Tusk like this,” he said.
“The male elephant was around 35 years old and had died about five days ago.
There were no external injuries in the carcass.
We have collected samples for laboratory tests and are waiting for test results to ensure the cause of death.” Veterinarian restored four water-gun pellets who lodged in the animal head.
“But they are old and don’t kill elephants.
Maybe happened a few months ago or a year ago,” Sukumar added.
Deputy Director M G Ganesan and Assistant Forest Conservator Ganesh Ram checked the carcass.
“The right Tusk of the elephant was broken.
It might happen because of the dispute.
The remaining part of the right ivory is intact,” said Ganesan.
After postmortem, the carcass was left in the forest for scavengers.
