Guwahati: The Government Assam is likely to conduct a survey to take encroachment along the edge of Bharalu, the main stormwater channel from the city.
In the past nine years, the government has not collected data on encroachment.
There is no action to revive the channel.
The Kamrup (Metro) District Administration in 2012 interfered with driving along the edge of Bharalu.
“After 2012, there were no surveys or drives.
We are thinking of conducting surveys and have instructed the relevant officials,” said Lakhyajit Duwaria, Circle Officer of Guwahati Revenue Circle.
The city has five bharalu river channels which are the main channels that drain flood water.
Capital will be flooded in a few minutes of rain during the rainy season.
Hemen’s conservationist Lahkar said rapid encroachment along the edge of the river channel and the lake was the main reason behind Guwahati floods and they deteriorated every year.
He said no acting the government had encouraged encroachment and as a result of river size has decreased dramatically for decades.
“It is unfortunate that administration does not have data about encroachment,” he added.
He said the survey and actions based on scientific methods to revive wet channels and wetlands was the requirement of hours.
Ak Bhagawati, a professor of geography at Gahati University, also emphasized the resurrection of the earliest river channels to reduce flooding.
“For this, the river bank must be made free of encroachment and the river must widen and dredge to bring rainwater from all cities,” he added.
This is related to stating that the state government has drives evictions on encroachment forest land in various parts of the country, including Dholpur in Darrang and Lumding Reserve Forest in the Hojai district.
