Enforce no Purchase & Usage of non-ISI helmets to Assess road deaths: Pros urge govt agencies

NEW DELHI: Currently since non-ISI two-wheeler helmets have become prohibited from June 1, law enforcement agencies such as the authorities and Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) have to measure its authorities, street safety and injury care specialists said.
Non-wearing or sporting bad excellent helmets would be the primary source of death of almost 78 percent of two-wheeler riders in India.
As stated by the road transportation ministry’s telling, sale and manufacturing of non-ISI marked helmets are both prohibited and based on the BIS Act, production, storing, promoting or export of non-ISI helmets bring punishment with imprisonment up to a year or a fine of Rs 1 lakh to 5 lakh.
In 2019, from the complete 56,000 two-wheeler riders that had been killed in road accidents, 43,600 were due to never wearing helmets.
“In case you’re not wearing a standard helmet, then it is more detrimental in the event of an accident.

Regular helmets absorb the power and do not let such harms,” explained Dr Amit Gupta, professor of trauma surgery and critical care at AIIMS.
He included sporting a non-standard helmet could be harmful as in the event of a collision that the broken sections can actually lead to more accidents to the mind.
Maybe not wearing a helmet that is standard brings a punishment under the Motor Vehicle Act.
Former DGP and also chairman of Road Safety Authority at Telangana, T Krishna Prasad explained the BIS must also set the list of goods which have the certificate in public domain so people are advised when purchasing the products and the government ought to guarantee their adequate accessibility.
“The traffic authorities can challan those sporting non-standard helmets or some other plastic cap simply to prevent a penalty.
Because it is an offence they need to crack down on the selling of these helmets on the industry.
The bigger goal is to save money,” said Rajeev Kapur, president of Two-wheeler Helmet Manufacturers Association.
Prasad said there must be no tolerance against non-wearing of helmets along with these criminals have to be contested.
“The government must make sure that there’s not any black advertising of ISI-mark helmets on the industry.
1 month time could be offered to users to follow the required wearing of ISI-marked helmets contemplating that in many countries helmet stores aren’t open due to lockdown,” he further added.
