LIVERPOOL: Liverpool rose to second in the Premier League after a goal from Fabinho, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Takumi Minamino got them a 3-0 victory over Brentford at Anfield on Sunday.
The victory moved the Juergen Klopp side on Chelsea at the table and 11 points behind Manchester City’s leader with a game at hand.
City beat Chelsea 1-0 on Saturday.
Win ended the patch without three matches in the league for Liverpool who had seen them fall from speed in the title race.
Liverpool without mohamed wrong and Sadio Mane who played in the African Cup and their lack of potential in a proven attack when they struggled to open the determined Brentford defense.
The home side finally broke a few minutes before the interval when the corner from Trent Alexander-Arnold bounced to the back post and nodded home by Fabinho.
The London side continued to prove tough opponents after a break even though Diogo Jota crashed into the post in the 62nd minute after Alexander-Arnold had exploded into the box and Guard Brentford Alvaro Fernandez did well to prevent other efforts from Portuguese.
But Brentford lived in the contest until the 69th minute when Oxlade-Chamberlain bent at the back post to get a beautiful cross from the left behind Andy Robertson.
Minamino’s replacement was wrapped around the victory, knocking home after Brentford’s efforts to play from behind was intercepted by Roberto Firmino who founded Japan forward to finish it.
There was almost a dream league debut for 17-year-old substitute Kaide Gordon, which was put in goal but was rejected by a good rescue from Fernandez.
“We need these three points and good performance so it’s good to do it in front of our fans.
It would be good to grow our confidence,” Fabinho said.
“The team played very well with balls.
The next three played very well.
We created many opportunities to score.
This is an opportunity for everyone to show their quality and steps.
We do that today,” he added.
Promoted Brentford was in 14th position at 23 points.
