Brussels: The European Union announced on Thursday that it would donate more than 200 million doses of vaccines against Covid-19 to countries with average and low income before the end of this year.
It was twice the initial number of block 27 countries planned to be submitted, mostly through Covax, a program that was not supported to provide a vaccine for the poorest part of the world.
The European Commission’s President, Ursula Von Der Leyen, said the European Union had “took his responsibility in helping the world against the virus”.
“Vaccination is very important, which is why it is important to ensure access to the Covid-19 vaccine throughout the world,” he said.
According to UE data, Covax has so far delivered 122 million vaccine doses to 136 countries.
The European Union said it had provided assistance to African countries to help them produce vaccines and drugs to reduce continental dependence on imports, the Associated Press reported.
