Bengaluru: Former Director General and Inspector General of Police (DG & IGP) Shankar M Bidari has been cheated by Rs 89,000 with online fraudsters.
The Southeast CEN crime police have registered cases of cheating and virtual world crime against unknown events based on complaints submitted by Bidari on October 11.
This case has been registered under Section 66C (punishment for identity theft) and 66D (cheating penalty using personation using computer resources) under the Information Technology Law and IPC part 420 (cheating) against the suspect.
Bidari stated that he had received a message on his cellphone which said that the Pan number needed to be updated and that his bank account would be blocked immediately if he failed to do it.
Bidari also received calls from unknown people, who introduced themselves as representatives of the bank customer service unit and convinced him that PAN details must be updated.
Fraudsters told him to reveal the one-time password (OTP) sent to his cellphone number and Bidari did it.
The former police learned that he was cheated when he received a message from his bank about the reduction of money.
