The Department of Defense and Strategic Study, Punjabi University, Patiala recently signed the MoU with the Army of War, Mhow (MP) to offer a postgraduate diploma in security and strategies.
“The newly launched course will serve defense officers.
It aims to instill conceptual understanding of the theories of security and strategic studies and instill an understanding of regional and international security environments.

Apart from this, the University also offers two-year MA (defense and strategic studies) and PhDs for others.

MA (Defense and Strategic Study) is a two-year course, which aims to instill deep understanding among students on vital problems.
“War, national security, strategic thinking, defense related problems in international relations and international law, history of war, military psychology, military sociology, the impact of science and technology in warfare, peace studies and conflict resolution, South Asian and Indian Samudra, problems Indian security, etc.
At first taught as part of the curriculum, “Singh said.
Highlighting the need for separate courses, Arvind, Deputy Chancellor, Punjabi University, said that exclusive courses about defense and strategies provide an opportunity to obtain a broad perspective on this issue.
“It also helps military personnel to get academic and theoretical knowledge through ordinary university programs,” said Arvind.
“Students with expertise will play an important role in strategic state security strategies.
They can be rented by agents involved in this field such as Drdo,” Arvind said.
Harish K Thakur, Chairperson, Department of Defense and strategic studies, Himachal Pradesh University said that the defense course and strategy would bring diversity and allow students of humanities aimed at seeing beyond traditional subjects.
In fact, there are fewer awareness among students about the subject and career prospects in this field.
Himachal Pradesh University which launched the Supreme Court in a defense & strategic study in 2020, was running an online campaign throughout the state to spread awareness about this program.
“We are connected to various universities in the state to make students aware of this program.
The university receives the reception application for courses until July 12,” Thakur said.
Last year, they only had 11 reception against 30 seats available for the course.
Thakur hopes that special courses will enlighten students about critical problems related to defense and strategy.
Career prospects
“Teaching and research, think tanks, armed forces, central armed police forces, civil journalism and defense journalism are some prominent areas where candidates can explore employment opportunities after completing their courses,” Singh said.
Feasibility and Acceptance Process
Graduates in any flow are eligible to apply to enter the two-year MA (defense and strategic studies).
For the PG program, selected candidates are based on services in the qualifying class.
Some institutions offer courses
Very few universities offer defense and strategic studies and it is also at the PG level.
This whole includes the University of Punjabi, Kurukshetra University, Savitribai Phule Pune University, and Maharshi Dairand University, Rohtak, University of Allahabad, Madras and Ballia University of Jannayak Chandrashekhar.
