Aizawl: The biggest and most powerful church in the northeastern state of Mizoram dominated by Christianity, the Presbyterian Church, decided to appeal to the state government to extend maternity leave for women who provide children to encourage married couples to have more babies.
This resolution was passed by the delegation of the synod conference, the highest decision-making authority from the Prebeyterian Church on Saturday.
The annual synod conference was held at the local Church of the Republic of Veng in Aizawl from Tuesday and concluded on Sunday while delegates discussed 49 agendas on Friday and Saturday.
During the discussion, the majority of delegates from all countries said that the increase in the population of Church members and Mizos as a whole had become important to survive and prosperity.
They say the population can only be improved by having more babies and one of the most important encouragement is the extension of the days of maternity leave for women who work in the state government as incentives.
The decision to appeal the state government to extend maternity leave for women who have more infants has been accepted and the synod conference ratified the executive committee of the synod, the second highest decision-making authority from the Presbyterian Church to pursue problems with the state government.
Not only the Presbyterian Church, the Baptist Mizoram Church, the second largest church in the state, and other church denominations also hit the baby boom in the country to survive as a minority religious community in the country, while the Central Committee of Young Mizo Association (YMA), civil society The biggest and most powerful also supports movement.
Churches and YMA argue that Mizos as a tribe and religious minority must increase the population to survive and have pushed couples to have more children.
They said decadal growth in the country’s population, especially among Mizo Christians had declined by steadily over the past few years while the growth population of Chakmas, which was considered by many Mizo as foreigners, increased abnormally, endangering in a balanced growth of demographics.
The Baptist Mizoram church even offers monetary incentives to couples who have more children, while the Presbyterian church displays hoarding that encourages married couples to bear more children called “patriotic propositions”.
The State Minister also took a signal and distributed Rs 2.5 lakh to 17 women who gave the number of maximum children, on October 12 and provide cash incentives RS 1 Lakh to a 15-child boring woman.
Tourism Minister Robert Romawia Royte, on his function, said incentives to mothers to have more children were given according to “more drives of children” which were launched by different church denominations and the Mizo Young Association Central Committee (YMA).
