Facebook Parent Meta Platforms Inc.
said on Thursday it will invest in New Zealand to promote and visit news publishers and improve their digital capabilities, a month after the giant social media landed at Australian media outlets for content licenses.
The company, which does not reveal the number of investments, said the program will include local publishing training from various backgrounds to encourage digital audiences and their income growth, both inside and outside Facebook.
Meta also said it would partner with an international center for journalists to establish advisory panels consisting of five Kiwi media personnel who would help develop the talent chosen under the program.
This step came just a few days after Australian academic publishers urged the government to enforce new laws to force Facebook to negotiate content agreements, as well as other large media companies such as News Corp.
