Facebook (Rebranded to Meta) has announced that it turns off the automatic face marking system available on the social media platform.
This system is powered by facial recognition and finds people in photos by identifying their faces.
The technology giant has also announced that it will remove the face recognition template of more than one billion individuals.
Face users will no longer be automatically recognized in photos, videos or memories and users will not be able to change this feature again.
Even though Facebook still encourages users to mark their posts manually, the automatic process will no longer be available.
In addition, another full-named Alt Text automatically developed to make a picture description for blind people will no longer have the person’s name in a recognized photo.
Facebook has confirmed that this feature will take action in the coming weeks and it is said that he needs to weigh the cases of positive use for facial recognition of increasing community concerns, especially because the regulator has not provided clear rules’.
The company also quotes that the ‘long-term role’ of facial recognition in our society “needs to be debated in the open and among those who will be most affected by it”.
Facebook also promised that it would continue to be “involved in the conversation and worked with groups and regulators of civil society who led this discussion”.
This step was taken by Facebook by quoting increasing public concerns about the use of this technology, because the technology industry faced criticism over the past few years about ethics.
