Facebook has announced a new segment of submarine cable called pearl 2AFrica, which connects three continents – Africa, Europe and Asia.
This extension will bring the total length of the 2AFrica cable system to more than 45,000 kilometers, making it the longest underwater cable system ever used.
At first, 2AFrica cables were set to stretch at 37,000 km at the seabed with the aim of expanding internet infrastructure in Africa.
Initially, the company planned to increase connectivity to 1.2 billion people.
With the additional segment, the system will now provide connectivity to an additional 1.8 billion people, amounting to 3 billion people, or around 36 percent of the global population.
The new segment added several new landing locations in Oman, UAE, Qatar, Bahrain, Kuwait, Iraq, Pakistan, India, and Saudi Arabia.
According to the company, 2AFrica will significantly increase connectivity in Africa and it is better to connect Africa to the whole world, because in the end it will connect 33 countries in Africa, the Middle East and Europe.
At present, the longest underwater cable in the world is Sea-Me-We3 or Southeast Asia – Middle East – West Europe 3 which length is 39,000 kilometers and completed in 2000.
It has 39 landing points.
