Letter: Racket provides the Gemological of America’s (GIA) institute original certificate for low-quality diamonds has been captured by city police.
Police arrested Dharmesh Patel, a diamond trader and filed an informal complaint to start an investigation.
The police seized valuables worth Rs 11 Lakh from Patel under the criminal procedure code 102 which ratified the police to seize products to be investigated.
The police recovered a total of 24 GIA certificates from Patel which he had arranged from other diamond entrepreneurs.
The police also found five inferior quality diamonds that had a written number on it which matched five certificates.
The laser machine that he used to write numbers on a diamond to prove that it was the same diamond mentioned in the certificate was also confiscated.
“Patel targets relatively less experienced entrepreneurs and provides low-quality diamonds with certificates that have high-value diamond descriptions.
We have approached the GIA to verify whether the certificate is original and for the product where they issue it,” said RK Dhuliya, Police Inspector, Mahidharpura Police Station .
The investigation revealed that Patel had arranged certificates from diamond entrepreneurs who did not provide it with diamonds sold.
“He collects only high-value certificates from famous entrepreneurs and then uses it with low quality diamonds,” Dhuliya said.
Pravin Nanavati, a diamond businessman and veteran jewelry, said, “If this really happened, it was very unfortunate and damaged the Diamond City business.
I strongly believe that it is difficult to commit crimes because GIA certification is accurate and use it with some inferior diamonds is difficult.” DINESH NAVADIYA, regional leader, gem export board and jewelry (GJEC), added, “The same thing was detected by Gia in Mumbai but if this happened in a letter, it was surprising.
GJEPC created awareness about various problems like this to prevent the wrong practice in market, “said
