Chennai: Tamil Nadu Agriculture Minister M Panneerselvam said in the assembly on Thursday that the insurance companies are expected to pay compensation ₹ 2,000 crore to farmers for crop losses for Samba cultivation last year.
Farmers were hit by a series of natural disasters such as Hurricane Cyclone Nivar and Burevi in November last year and the rain was not season in January this year.
The source in the government said relief would benefit 12.4 lakh farmers, who had taken plant insurance.
Participating in the budget debate, Panneerselvam said the compensation of ₹ 107.5 crore paid on last year’s crop loss under insurance scheme, profitable 1.64 lakh farmers.
Farmers from Tiruvarur, Mayiladuthurai and Nagapattinam Regency will receive compensation in 10 days, he said.
From ₹ 2,500 premium crore for samba insurance last year, the state government has paid a share of ₹ 1,550 crore, said minister.
This center hasn’t paid the shares, he added.
Compensation to farmers will be released as soon as the center pays a premium, the Minister said.
The country has released ₹ 1,100 crore to compensation to farmers under state disaster relief funds, he said.
Because of the extraordinary contributions from the private factory to sugar cane farmers floating around ₹ 1,200 crore, the minister said the government would hold tripartite talks to resolve the problem.
The minister’s chairman on Thursday approved ₹ 182 crore to 12 cooperative sector sugar factories and the public sector for the 2020-21 crusher season, he said.
Ambitious program of the Government, ‘Kalignarin Anaithu Grama Orunginaintha Valarar Valarchi Thittam’ will be held in 12,500 village Panchayats in the span of five years will ensure the overall development in agriculture and self-sufficiency because it would involve the various government departments.
The country will share ₹ 250 crore in the first year, Panneerselvam said.
The government has also imagined various agricultural schemes to support three lakh youth at a cost of ₹ 340 crore, he said.
