Panaji: thick bunches of fiber cables and utility lines are placed in the culverts and storm waterways across state capital inhibiting rainwater flow and leading to airlogging, the corporation said the city of Panaji (CCP).
Solid waste, especially pet bottles and politene pockets dumped in a drainage system, are trapped in cables that affect the flow, the CCP official said.
CCP Commissioner Agnelo Fernandes told TII that corporate workers had difficulty continuously cleaning the planned storm plants of Panaji, some of which layered and in bad conditions.
While the CCP has requested telecommunications operators and utility service providers to remove cables from the water channel, the latter has requested CCP to make other settings where the cable can be placed.
“Nearly 100% of the full water channel cables, electrical cables, optical fiber cables and various other, effectively blocking the flow of water and trapping garbage,” Fernandes said.
Under the Mission of Smart City, the authorities have described ambitious goals to put a special ditch utility throughout the city which will end fully to explore the road and will also help divert cables from storm waterways.
Imagine Panaji Smart City Development Limited (IPSCDL) has proposed to make a shared trench for wastewater, water pipes, fiber optic cables, electricity supply and even city gas networks.

CCP officials say that each monsoon, plastic waste is washed to the drainage network and jammed where the water channel is narrow or where the cable passes.
The Civic’s body has assigned daily wage workers to cleanse congestion as and when they occur, as delays in cleaning waterways causing inundation.
Because many cables – each size of 5-8cm in diameter – closely connected, corporate workers find it difficult to clean the clogs without damaging the cable, an official said.
