Hyderabad: The Consumer Court in the Ranga Reddy District has directed the management of the cinema in the uppal to pay Rs 4 Lakh to a woman who fell while finding her seat in a dark hall and suffered dissolved legs.
The District Consumer Forum said that theater management did not have staff with a torch lamp to help him find his seat.
The court called it a shortage in service and stated that every delay in paying compensation outside 45 days will bring a 9% sentence every year.
Gogieddy Vanaja, a complainant, has been in November 2016, passed with friends and relatives to the Asian theater to watch the afternoon shows.
When the film screening began when they entered the cinema hall, they found it difficult to get to their seats in total darkness.
Staff with torches to guide viewers are also gone.
Vana said in his complaint that in the dark he felt as if something blocked his steps, and he tripped and fell, leaving him with a broken leg.
His friends and relatives called an ambulance and shifted him to the nearest hospital.
The next few months hurt Vana when he underwent two operations involving replacing several foot bones with steel stems costing more than Rs 8 Lakh.
He accused his complaint that theater management did nothing to support him during the time of distress.
Even the ambulance who took him to the hospital was arranged by his friends.
Legal notices sent to theater management who are looking for explanations and costs also do not produce any response.
That’s when he approached the District Consumer Commission who was looking for compensation for the loss he suffered and the trauma he had experienced.
He also filed firs with local police who were seeking punishment for those responsible for negligence in the maintenance of theater.
Chitneni Lata Kumari’s presidential bench and GVS Prasad Rao D Madhavi Latha members called for an explanation of theater management.
Even though an advocate appeared for theater, he failed to submit Affidavit.
Finally, the bench recorded proof of complainants including photo tickets, and medical bills, and came to the conclusion that the theater was lacking in the service.
“This is a common practice in the cinema that someone holds the torch and escorts the people to their seats.
There is no such service in the current case,” said GVS Prasad Rao, who wrote orders for the bench.
Bench while partly allows the request by Vanaja, directs theater management to pay Rs 3.81 lakh to medical costs, additional RS 25,000 compensation, and more Rs 10,000 as legal fees to the applicant in 45 days.
