Greece: Fire aircraft continued operations on the first light in Greece on Wednesday to deal with large forest fires in the northern suburbs of Athens who forced thousands to escape from their homes in the midst of the worst heat waves in the middle.
The fire on the outskirts of varibilities and tellers from the Greek capital was the worst of 81 forest fires that broke out throughout the country in 24 hours from Monday to Tuesday night.
Five aircraft dropped water and nine helicopters helped more than 500 firefighters, soldiers and many groups of volunteers in the field, the fire department said.
“It was another very difficult night,” said Civil Protection Head Nikos Hardalianias while visiting the Cellular Fire Coordination Center in the area on Wednesday morning.
He said firefighters had succeeded in reducing four active fire fronts into one overnight.
“There’s still a lot of work to do,” he said.
The fire was driven by dry conditions caused by protracted heat waves which began last week and sent temperatures that jumped up to 45 degrees Celsius (113 f).
There are no reports of death or serious injury.
The fire burned home, business, and vehicle, and sent a large cloud of smoke in Athens on Tuesday night.
The government announced it would provide hotel rooms for locals as long as they could not return to their homes.
On Tuesday, residents were evacuated in a car and walked, driving a school in the area competing to evacuate horses from the fire.
Some horses, released from their cages, roam the streets.
The edge of the varibobi and tato leaves lying at the foot of Mount Parnitha, next to a large forest, especially pine trees.
API, which began on Tuesday afternoon in the forest, quickly ran through flammable pine and reached the main square varibobi.
Some of the closest residents bring social media to offer protection for fire affected animals.
Apart from the fire in the north of Athens, two main forest fires were still burned Wednesday morning, one on Evia Island and one in Southwest Peloponnese.
The fire department said 95 firefighters, two airplanes, four land teams and 35 vehicles fought against fire at Evia, while 74 firefighters, three land teams, 22 vehicles and one helicopter handle fire in the Peloponnese area.
When the heat wave burns intensive eastern Mediterranean, the temperature reaches 42 degrees Celsius (107.6 f) in parts of Greece’s capital.
Extreme weather has triggered deadly forest fires in Turkey and Blazes in Italy, Greece, Albania and throughout the region.
Heatwave is expected to continue in Greece until the end of the week.
