ThiruvananThapuram: The tense situation applies on Wednesday after fishermen held a road blockade at the Perumathura Bridge, accused the police tendency in taking legal steps in an accident where one of their ships was destroyed.
The blockade continued for more than six hours after vehicle traffic along the coastal road was disrupted.
On Tuesday, the ship carrying 22 fishermen was destroyed after another boat hit him from behind in the Muthalapozhi Breakwater area here.
The boat caused the accident belonging to the fishermen from the Thazhamballi area here.
Shakkir, the owner of the ship who was destroyed, said he suffered a loss around Rs 32 Lakh in the accident.
It involves the cost of the boat, the cost of clean and medical for injured fishermen.
Even though there was a complaint, the Anchuthengu beach police did not register a case, which flicked the fishermen.
Fishermen call protests after senior officials, including Attingal DSP Suneeesh Babu and Varkala DSP Babukuttan, held talks with the protesters along with President Panchayat Chirayinkezu and promised them to collect compensation from the ship owner who caused the accident, anchuthengu coastal police office inspector Kannan said.
“Without police take legal steps, we cannot approach the official forum for compensation,” Shakkir said.
A total of 16 men in sustainable injuries, including one with serious injuries.
